Exploring geological manipulation of the urban landscape, this discussion follows the the materials of Nairobi's transformation. All across the city, as shambas become ghorofas, earth is made to reach the sky. Excavation and extraction, quarrying and land speculation underpin highrise skylines. But horizons can be fragile: buildings collapse and construction sites play host to new urban ecologies. A discussion of the exhibition by James Muriuki and Constance Smith: A practice-led collaboration into cultures of construction, they juxtapose film, photography and installation exploring the materials of Nairobi's transformation as earth is made to meet the sky.
