Act Local to Go Global - Restoring the lost and damaged ecosystems for livelihood improvement

The Kiang West is a peninsular, and has a combination of forest land, grass land, farm lands and mangrove estuarine system situated within the Gambia, kiang west peninsular covers 71,000ha of surface area within Kiang west district, lower river region. Agriculture remains the backbone of their economic gains and livelihoods enhancement. It produces about 50% of their food supplies from only 60% of the peninsular total arable land. Bamboo Foundation The Gambia and its partners celebrated World Habitat Day by planting 100,000 mangrove seedlings and propagules in Sankandi, Lower River Region. The aim is to support livelihood for oyster farmers and fish farmers, restoration of mangrove ecosystems. »Protect water quality by removing nutrients and pollutants from storm water runoff before reaching sea grass habitat and coral reef » Mangrove peat absorbs water during heavy rains and storm surge, reducing the chances of coastal flooding » Mangroves provide nursery habitat for many commercial fish and shellfish and thus contributes to the local abundance of seafood
